variable dimensions“No Standing Just Dancing” is a series on the Parisian club scene, made between 2013 and 2014 with the support of Giuliana Setari and the Dena Foundation for Contemporary Art.
Before arriving in Paris, I had little knowledge of the city’s underground dance culture, and I was immediately drawn in by the energy, freedom, and sense of community both from the insiders and the audience. Instead of focusing on a singular aspect of this movement, I approached it from three distinct standpoints: the dancefloor, the music production, and the urban landscape.
The journey began at Concrete, a club that hosted daytime events every other Sunday on a barge along the Seine River, just a few minutes from the Gare de Lyon. The first images I made were of the crowd on the open-air terrace. The project’s title, “No Standing Just Dancing,” was inspired by a small sign spotted near the DJ booth, which read, “No standing just dancing. Please don’t kill the vibe.”
To further explore Paris’s dynamic electronic music scene, I compiled a personal “to do list” of venues that hosted regular or occasional parties. Initially, this list served as a tool for exploration, but as I got more involved into the scene, personal taste guided me through the nightlife.
